Teatro Morlacchi: A Magnificent Italian Theatre in Perugia

Porta Perugia: Ester Andrina - March 2025

Paintings, gold decorations, crystal chandeliers and the many small boxes, each with its own entrance, make attending a performance here a unique experience. A place where the Perugini meet and socialise before the beginning of the show.

The history of the theatre has always been closely linked to the city's bourgeoisie. At the end of the eighteenth century, ninety families came together and decided to build their own prestigious theatre. Alessio Lorenzini, a Perugian architect, was entrusted with the project, and famous artists such as Baldassarre Orsini, Carlo Spiridione Mariotti and Giovanni Cappelli contributed to the artistic design. A horseshoe-shape with multiple levels and boxes was chosen, a design that originated in Naples and was found in other important Italian theatres of the period.

The new theatre in Perugia was inaugurated in 1781. Since then, the building has undergone several more restorations and extensions. Most of the paintings visible today date from the 19th century, and the current structure is the result of an extension in 1874. From that year, it was also renamed 'Teatro Morlacchi', after the Perugian musician and philosopher Francesco Morlacchi.

In the photo below, taken by Giovanni Varchetta, you can see us in one of the boxes. What I particularly like is the view you have from there, and at the same time the privacy to have your own space with friends.
